Abstract

16,475. Turner, A. July 10, 1913, [Convention date]. Felt and like h a t s ornamenting.-A pattern is produced by rais. ing ribs or other designs on the surface of the body and pouncing or otherwise removing the upstanding parts before blocking, shaping, and finishing the hat. The body, after being dyed, stiffened, steamed, and softened, is placed in a mould having the pattern cut in it, and a rubber former is hydraulically pressed into the body so as to force it into the grooves &c. in the mould and raise the pattern on it, as shown in section in Fig. 4. After the upstanding parts have been pounced off, as shown in Fig. 6, the body is steamed, blocked to its final shape, sized, and ironed, the result being a smooth surface showing two textures c, d, Fig. 8. Alternatively, a rough felt showing a pattern may be obtained by pouncing the embossed body and merely shaping it over a block with steam or hot water. In the case of dyed bodies in which the outer layers a, c, Fig. 4, consist chiefly of fur coloured differently from the inner part e consisting principally of ramie, a two-tone effect is produced.
