Clutches, friction.-Friction clutches of the self-locking type are operated by electromagnets which are only energized when the clutch is being put into or out of engagement. An axially-movable armature ring a, Fig. 1, is attracted by one of two coils s, and operates the clutch b through toggle-levers a<1>. The armature may comprise a sleeve moving within the coils and drawn into one or other of them. As shown in Fig. 4 applied to a double-cone clutch, one of the coils s<1> may be wound on a movable sleeve k, the clutch being thrown into or out of action according as the coils magnetize the core similarly or oppositely. The device is applied to other types of clutches, such as a double-plate clutch, the plates of which are pressed apart by toggle-levers. When alternating or polyphase current is employed, a number of moving magnets or armatures k, Fig. 8, are arranged either radially as shown, or parallel to the shaft, and are connected individually to the clutch levers.
