Abstract

15,313. Yates, R., and Miller, J. D. June 26. Mechanical telegraphs.- A signal-receiving apparatus is arranged to indicate the number of signal impulses received by displaying a number, and to indicate the origin of the signal by displaying a letter. As shown in Fig. 1, the signal 3 has been received from station A. Each of the levers 18, Figs. 2 and 3, is connected by a cord to a transmitting.station, and a moyement of a lever 18 actuates a common member 22 and a separate lever 17. The member 22 controls a pawl 9, which rotates a ratchet - wheel on the barrel 8. The pins 7 mounted spirally on the barrel move forward the levers 3 in turn, and these levers are also moved upward by the member 22. As each lever 3 is moved forward and upward, its slide 1 is raised and is held by a catch 4. The raising of one slide also releases the previously raised slide. Thus, when a number of impulses is received, the slides showing numerals 1, 2, 3, &c. are raised in turn, the slide last raised remaining in display position. The levers 17 raise similar slides 1 to display one of the letters A, B, C, to indicate the origin of the signal. The barrel 8 is returned to initial position by a weight 11, but the return is retarded by a dash-pot device 15 controlling a release pawl 13. In order that the display element 3 which corresponds to a special signal, such as that for raising men, may remain in position while signals 1, 2 are being given, the element 3 is not held by the catch 4, but by a special catch 19, which is released only when the signal 4 is given. The catch 4 is also released by a rod 20 controlled by an operative member of the winding engine.
