Abstract
14,854. Moxon, E. June 20. Roads and ways, arrangement of.-The roads &c. in a coal mine opened out on the long wall advancing system are arranged so that the air for ventilation has easy access to the coal face, passes along the coal face, and returns by isolated return ways directly to one or more upcast shafts. A new mine is opened out with parallel intake and haulage roads d, d<1> at right-angles to parallel intake and haulage roads f, f<1> from which the air passes by cross roads h to near the centre of each wall of the mine. Return roads e, g are driven between the intake roads. Doors D opening against the air pressure are placed in all other roads or gates to prevent short-circuiting of the air current. As the mine is extended, a second downcast shaft c<1>, Fig. 2, and upcasts b<1>, b<2> may be sunk, the original upcast b being used as a downcast. Air then passes from the downcasts through the roads f, f<1>, g and the roads d and gates i, the road g and the gates i alone leading to the coal face, and returns to the upcasts by roads e, k, k<1>. As the mine is further extended, branch intakes and return ways are set out at right-angles to the main roads as required. Existing mines may be opened out beyond 'faults' in a similar manner, as may also mines in which drifts or headings are driven from the surface.
