Roller-and-ring mills and apparatus; revolving drum and loose internal edge-runners.-In a grinding or crushing machine with a rapidlyrotating horizontal grinding-drum 1, Fig. 1, containing a grinding-member 5, which may be driven frictionally from the lower portion of the drum and is arranged with its axis at an angle to the axis of the drum without intersecting it, the material to be ground is introduced through an opening at that end of the drum towards which the drum tends to force the member 5 and the finished product is discharged through openings 8 at the opposite end of the drum. The member 5, which may be cylindrical, conical, &c., is fixed on a shaft 6 supported in a bearing 7 outside the drum so as to be free to move sideways within limits, but not longitudinally. Fig. 4 shows a cylindrical drum with a series of grinding-members 5 carried by a rod 6, which passes through conical openings 13 in the members 5 and is fitted with spherical thrustcollars 14. A machine comprising a drum composed of a series of truncated cones and containing a series of conical grinding-members may be used. Fig. 6 shows apparatus in which the grinding-members are loose within the drum and held in the skew position by the journals 15 of adjacent members; each grinding-member may consist of disks 16 loose on the shaft 17 solid with end disks 18. In machines with only one grinding-member, the grinding-drum may be driven from the grinding-member.
