Abstract

Carboxylates; hydrocellulose.-In the production of cellulose esters of fatty acids, the cellulose is subjected to a preliminary treatment with small quantities of acetic anhydride in the presence of a catalyzer diluted with glacial acetic acid. For example, cellulose is warmed with a mixture of glacial acetic acid, sulphuric' acid, and about one-sixth of the acetic anhydride required foiacetylation. After a suitable time, the remainder of the anhydride is added, and the acetylation conducted as usual. The acetate obtained is characterized by insolubility in nitrobenzene, acetone, or ether, slight solubility in alcohol, and ready solubility in chloroform. The acetates may be partly saponified in solution, giving acetates soluble in acetone, plastic in chloroform, ethyl acetate and tetrachlorethane.
