Tentering.-In clip-chain tentering-machines, in order to vary the position at which the clips close upon the cloth and enable the two chains of clips to be set closer together at the receiving-end, an adjustable cam-plate, guide-rail, or bracket is mounted upon the feed-end of the chain races to hold the clips open, and one or more auxiliary camplates, guide-rails, or brackets may be fitted thereto to close the clips:forcibly, if necessary by reason of any obstruction, after their release. In the form shown in plan in Fig. 3, in which one side rail A and chain B of the machine are shown, the camplate D is adjustable by swivelling it about the stud E, upon which the sprocket-wheel b rotates, and auxiliary guide-rails G, G<1> are provided. In the position shown, the fingers b<1> of the clips contact with the whole length of the cam-plate, the clips being held open until they piss the end of it ; the guide-rail G is inoperative and any obstructed clips are closed by the rail G'. By setting the camplate to the position shown in Fig. 6, the clips are permitted to close soon after passing from the sprocket-wheel, and are forcibly closed by the auxiliary rail G, the rail G' being then inoperative. In a modification, the cam-plate D may be fixed, and a sliding piece is fitted thereto, or to the side rails of the machine, to vary the extent of the operative portion of the plate. In machines in which the cam-plate is an incline rising from the side rail, an adjustable inclined plate is pivoted at one end to the cam-plate, so that it may be inclined more or less to hold the clips open for a longer or shorter period, and the adjustable plate may itself have a flexibly-jointed end portion. In machines in which the cam-plate is in the form of a rotary inverted conical frustum, the adjustable straight plate has curved slots to permit a swivelling adjustment while keeping the end in contact with the rotary plate. In machines in which the tenter-clip is without a finger or tail piece b, and the camplate acts directly upon the clip and is of concave or crescent shape, the adjustable cam-plate is pivoted to the fixed one and is further carried on a bracket bolted to the side rail.
