Couplings, automatic.-Relates to couplings of the type in which an arrow-headed member carried by one vehicle engages between pivoted hooks carried by the other vehicle. A locking- member 5 adapted to retain the hooks 2 in the coupled position is, prior to the coupling operation, disposed in front of the hooks, but upon coupling taking place, slides rearwardly into the locking position. The hooks 2 are pivotally mounted in a housing 1 carried by the draw-bar 6 and are opened against spring action by the arrow-head 3. The member 5 comprises a ring carried by rods 16 secured to a member 15, which is arranged to slide upon the draw-bar 6, and a compression spring 22 is disposed between the housing 1 and the member 15. Prior to coupling, the spring 22 is held compressed by the engagement with recesses 17 in the rods 16 of hooks 18, which are mounted in the walls of the housing 1 and are pressed inwardly by springs 21. When coupling occurs, the head 3 presses outwardly the hooks 18, whereupon the ring 5 is moved rearwardly by the action of the spring 22. To unlock the coupling, the member 15 is moved forwardly by a fork 25 upon a transverse operating-shaft. Draw-gear.-The draw-bars 6, 7 pivoted to the vehicles at 23, 24 respectively, are locked against lateral swinging prior to coupling, but are released when coupling takes place. To lock the draw-bar 6, the member 15 carries a hook 12 adapted to engage a recess 11 in a stirrup 10 fixed to the vehicle, the hook being disengaged by the rearward movement of the member 15 when coupling occurs. The drawbar 7 is locked similarly by a hook 12 carried by a member 13, which is mounted to slide on the bar and is pressed forwardly by a spring.
