Printing-surfaces; inking - apparatus.-An apparatus for cleaning rollers such as engraved copper printing - rollers comprises a tank to contain the cleaning-liquid, a support for rotating the rollers and raising and lowering them out of and into the liquid, and traversing brushes or scrubbers suspended above the rollers on a movable support. Fig. 2 shows, in transverse section, an apparatus in which the rollers a to be cleaned are supported at each end on friction rollers C on pairs of shafts c in a movable frame B mounted on links b pivoted on a stationary frame E in the bottom of the tank A. The frame B may be raised and lowered by a block F sliding in the frame E and having an incline with friction rollers engaging an incline b<1> on the frame B. The block F is moved by a screw F<1> and hand-wheel f<1>. Back-and-pinion or screw mechanism may be used in place of the inclines for moving the frame B. The shafts c are rotated in unison by a sprocket chain C' and one of them is driven by gearing from a driving-shaft. The brushes or scrubbers D are suspended by telescopic spring connexions d from screw shafts H journaled in a pivoted frame D<1> so that the brushes may be moved away from the rollers. The frame D' is counterbalanced. The shafts H are formed with right and left hand screw grooves, and traverse the brushes to and fro along the rollers a. They are driven by a chain from the driving-pulleys. The driving- pulleys are so arranged that the shafts c only may be driven, or both the shafts c, H. As a modification, cylindrical brushes may be used, mounted to rotate upon and traverse to and fro on the shafts H.
