Abstract
11,140. Franklin, J. N. May 6. Fastenings operated mechanically from a distance; sliding bolts.-In apparatus for simultaneously fastening railway-carriage doors, the fastenings each consist of a holt D<6>, which is integral with a spring- pressed member D slidable between fixed guides A, E. The part D is moved upward to force the bolt into a socket :n the door, by means of a wedge - shaped piece B, which is moved horizontally between guides A, C by a grooved member G'. The simultaneous operation ef the fastenings is effected by means of a series of alined rods H, situate beneath the centre uf the carriages and running the length of the train, the rods being connected between the carriages by spring-controlled telescopic couplings I joined together by loose pivot pins L, Fig. 11. Cross-rods-G, Fig. 8, are loosely mounted on the main rods H, the rods G having the bolt-actuating parts G' fixed thereto at each end. When the connected rods H are moved in one direction by means of a lever on the engine or guard's van, projections H<1> thereon cause the cross-rods to move so that the parts G<1> operate the bolts through the medium of the wedges B. The construction and arrangement is such that automatic unlocking of the doors would occur in case of a collision or derailment of the train.
