Abstract

9958. Kohler, U., and Stocklin, C. April 23, 1913, [Convention date]. Periodic-counter speed indicators.-In apparatus wherein a measurement is taken at will by manipulating a spring stud 44 so as to effect the drive of the pointer for a period determined by an escapement, the engagement and disengagement of the parts are both effected by a cam-disk which is driven by the clockwork. On the pointer spindle 22 is mounted a sleeve 21, which is driven frictionally from the prime shaft through a gear wheel 17 and drives the pointer spindle also frictionally through a spring 25. Fixed to the sleeve is a disk 24 having a milled edge adapted to be engaged by a detent lever 35, the other end of which is in contact with a cam 36 fixed to a gear-wheel 38 and a snail-cam 39. A co-axially mounted e capementwheel 37, controlled by an anchor 45 and balance 46, is provided with a pawl 40 which may be engaged by the nose of the cam 39. The gearwheel 38 is in mesh with a toothed sector 41 normally rotated clockwise by a spring 43. To obtain a reading, the stud 44 is depressed to rotate the sector 41 against the action of the spring sufficiently far to enable the cam 39 to be operative against the p@wl 40. On releasing the stud, the escapement mechanism works, and the cam 36 moves the lever 35 and so releases the wheel 24 and the pointer. The po'nter travels for a space of three seconds, at the end of which time the wheel 24 is again held and the pointer remains stationary. The pointer spindle 22 carries a gearwheel 29 which actuates a train of gearing terminating in a second pointer for showing the number of revolutions of the first pointer. The pointers are zeroized by turning an external button fixed to the pointer spindle. The drive to the wheel 17 from the spindle 4 is effected through a one-way driving-mechanism consisting of gearing 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12. The pinions 9, 10 are mounted on a lever 7 connected frictionally to the shaft 5<1> of the gear-wheel 5, so that this lever rocks in accordance with the direction of rotation of the prime shaft, and the drive is conveyed to wheel 11 or 12. In order that the instrument may be applied to shafts differing widely in speeds, alternative trains of gearing are provided for transmitting the drive from the wheels 11, 12 to the wheel 17. These trains are arranged on a lever 13 which can be adjusted by an arm 19 to throw either train into action. In place of the pawl lever 35 controlling the pointer mechanism, the connexion and disconnexion may be effected through a clutch or by disengageable gear-wheels.
