9427. Fairweather, W., [Singer Manufacturing Co.]. April 16. Ruffling - machines; feed by presser and needle. - A strip of fabric is fed downwards past the serrated end 77 of a feed-foot 38, and the fabric strip is crowded or ruffled by the end 77 before passing to the needle. The presser-foot 43 is turned up at 75 to form a support for the fabric strip when the feed-foot recedes from it and moves upward. The fabric strip is pressed on to the feed-foot and presser-foot by means of a freelypivoted spring plate 63 when the plate is pressed forward by the finger of the operator. The toe 75 of the presser-foot may also be serrated and then acts alternately with the feed-foot as a ruffler. The plate 63 is carried by a bracket 60, Fig. 4, pivoted at 62 and controlled by a spring 70 and a screw 72. It may be clamped in an inoperative position by a screw 73. The bracket also carries a rod 67 which, with the continuation of the pivot shaft 62, forms a guide for the fabric strip. Edge guides for the same are clamped upon the shaft 62. The feedfoot 38 is carried by a bar 34 linked to a lever 25, which is linked also to a crank 20 on the needle shaft. The feed-foot bar and the needlebar 41 reciprocate in an oscillating frame which also carries the coacting needle-throat.
