Abstract
9340. Fleming, J., and Fleming, R. J., [trading. as Fleming, J. & R.]. April 15. Lenses, grinding.-The lower field of a bifocal lens is ground by means of a grinding-disk f loosely engaged by an eccentric pin c on a rotating spindle b, so that the disk moves round in a circular path and at the same time rotates on its axis. The spindle b is carried in a frame a and is pressed downwards with the requisite degree of pressure by means of an arm l engaging a sleeve n<1> loosely mounted on the' spindle between the driving-pulley d and a collar b<1> secured to the spindle, the lower end of the arm being pulled by an adjustable spring o. The lens A is secured by cement or pitch to an adjustable table h carried by a bracket j. If the lower field is to be of elongated or oval shape, the table is carried by an arm which is adjustably pivoted on a rod extending downwardly and is oscillated by a rotary crank-pin engaging a vertical slot at the upper end of the arm. By adjustment of the length of the arm, the radius of curvature of the field is altered. If a concave lower field is required, the lens holder may be suspended from a pivot above the lens. The lower field may first be roughly ground by means of a circular grinding- tool q, Fig. 5, which for this purpose replaces the eccentric pin and the disk. According to the Provisional Specification, the eccentric pin may be furnished with a spring working against a former to produce a field of corresponding shape.
