Abstract

8892. Gee, W. J. April 8. Carrier bands and the like; floors.- Chinaclay, clay, fuller's earth, pigments, whitening, &c. are dried by intense heat while being kept in motion by an endless permeable band, to which they are supplied in thin films. Waste heat from the drier may be used to preheat the material. The permeable band may consist of a series of parallel wires. As shown, the material is fed from a hopper a to a band b passing over a table c. The hopper is formed with a slot, and provided with a stirring or expressing device c, Fig. 4, which is oscillated through crank-and-lever mechanism h, i, k, l from a rotating shaft g, and the rate of feed is controlled by the use of step pulleys on the shaft o driving the shaft g. The band consists of nickel wires passing over grooved pulleys p, q and separately kept under tension by springs t. The table consists of transverse channel-irons v covered with sheet aluminium, and is heated by electric or other heaters u. Over the table extends a hood x divided into two compartments. Through these air is drawn and forced by a fan 1 and, after heating by radiation and by the steam evolved from the material, is passed, along with the steam, to the jacket of the hopper a. The material is mainly supported by the table, the wires carrying it along and forming channels on its underside, along which the vapour passes until it reaches a crack in the material. According to the Provisional Specification, the mouth of the hopper may be formed as a series of small holes through which the material is discharged in rods.
