Abstract

8443. Lundy, J. C. April 3. Pneumatic collectors; sweeping-machines; taking up mud and refuse for removal. - Relates to machines in which the dust raised by the brush is sucked through a fan and discharged into a watertank, and consists in mounting on a hollow shaft a number of fans, the centre parts of which communicate directly with the dustchamber, the outlet pipes passing upward to a water-tank, which is also connected by a pipe with the hollow shaft so as to distribute water between the fan blades. In the form shown in sectional elevation in Fig. 1, the machine is motor-driven, its brush 8 being driven from the propelling- motor 4 through suitable gearing, so as to carry the refuse round the pan 12 and deliver it to a conveyer 15. This comprises an endless canvas band mounted on rollers 16, 17, and a secondary band formed of two strips 18 crossconnected by a series of slats 19; this band separates from the band 15 at the descending side of the elevator. The refuse carried up the conveyer drops through the slats, after passing the roller 17, into a chamber 14 from which it may be removed by a worm-conveyer 24 and duor 14<a>. In order to prevent dust from rising in the neighbourhood of the brush, air is drawn into the machine through the brush-aperture, by a series of fans 26 mounted on a shaft 28 driven from an auxiliary motor 33. These fans are mounted in casings the delivery pipes 26<a> of which pass through a water - tank 27 and rise above the water - level. The dust-laden air which enters each fan is sprayed with water led from the tank 27 through a pipe 29, and delivered centrifugally to the fan from holes in the shaft 28. The air then passes into the air space above the water in the tank 27, where the dust settles in the water and the purified air passes through the vent 32 into the atmosphere.
