Abstract
8056. Clark, J. P. March 31. Planes, construction of; steering and balancing.- The front part of the ribs of the wings of an aeroplane is divided into a number of articulated sections A, A<1>, A<2> which are simultaneously movable to adjust the camber of the wing, whereby the speed of the machine may be conteolled. The sections are jointed by pins B and are connected by crossed links or cords F, G, which are secured to rounded extensions of the sections. The operating - cords are connected either to the front or rear section A or A' and pass around the operating-shaft J. Separate shafts may be provided for the two wings, so that a differential movement may be bad for lateral balancing. The shafts J may be controlled by the steering-pillar T<1>, Fig. 8, controlling the elevator and lateral balancers. The pillar is formed with opposite screw-threads engaging nuts W connected by links to blocks X, which are mounted on pivoted axles S', S'. The arms carrying the axles are secured to toothed sectors S rotatable on a shaft Z and gearing with wheels L<1>, L<2> on shafts J<1>, J<2>, which are connected to the shafts J for controlling the camber of the two wings of the aeroplane, The elevator is connected to the pillar at T<1>, T<2> and is operated by rocking the pillar on the axles S', S'. By rocking the pillar sideways about the shaft Z, the shafts J<1>, J<2> are oppositely rotated, and the ailerons are also actuated by reason of their connexion with the pillar at the point T<1>. By rotating the pillar, the nuts W are brought together or separated, and the shafts J', J' are rotated in the same direction.
