Moulding india-rubber balls, hollow.ware, &c.- Hollow rubber articles such as balls, bulbs for syringes, &c. are made by first forming one end of the article from unvulcanized rubber by means of a mould and mandrel and subsequently withdrawing the mandrel and closing in the other end. The first part of the process may be carried out by forcing rubber between a mould and mandrel; or by placing a suitable quantity of rubber in the mould and pressing. Fig. 3 shows apparatus in which the rubber is forced from a tube h by a plunger f between a two-part mould i and a mandrel l. Hydraulic cylinders operate the plunger f, mould parts i, and mandrel l. The mould and mandrel are formed with passages for the circulation of a heating or cooling medium. In operation, the mould is closed around the mandrel, these are then heated and the rubber mass forced in by the plunger f. The mould and mandrel are then cooled and opened and the article detached from the mandrel by compressed air. The article 15 is then transferred to a mandrel 12, Fig. 6, where it is embraced by a rubber ring 1 extended by levers 3 operated by links 5 connected to a nut working on a threaded spindle 8. On rotating the spindle 8 by gearing 9, 10, the ring is caused to contract and close the other end of the article, as shown in Fig. 8, the mandrel 12 being simultaneously withdrawn by a threaded connexion 11. The part 16 is then removed and the article finished as shown in Fig. 11. In place of the ring 1, an iris-diaphragm device may be employed.
