Abstract

6636. Weiss, W. A. March 16. Lathe drivers and carriers.-In a lathe driver and carrier of the type in which jaws are pivoted to a flanged back plate and partly enclosed by a relativelyrotatable flanged overlapping front plate, the rim of one plate has a peripheral groove with a slot leading therefrom through which is passed a lug on the other rim to form a bayonet-joint. The jaws 11 are pivoted on pins 12 projecting from the back-plate 1 into a groove 23 on the front plate 5 and actuated by pins 15 on the front plate engaging grooves in the outer ends of the jaws. Lugs 8 on the front plate pass through the bayonet-slots 9 in the backplate and pins 10 are then screwed into the backplate to prevent the lugs from leaving the groove 4 and to act as stops to the rotation of the front plate. Springs 18 stretching between pins 16, 17 secured to the plates actuate the front plate to close the jaws. The front plate may be retained in any adjusted position by means of a pawl 21 pivoted in a recess under the backplate, and frictionally engaging the front plate.
