Abstract

5351. Warthen, H. J. March 2. Actuating; piston valves.-In an automatic electrical train-control system, an auxiliary valve 41 is operated by a solenoid 25 controlled from the railway track or from the engine when certain conditions of danger obtain in the system. This auxiliary valve 41 controls a piston valve 34, which is itself the auxiliary or relay valve of the main brake valve which is of similar construction. When the valve 41 is opened, the air pressure below a piston 33 is reduced and the valve piston 32 falls, closing a normally open thoroughfare 34 to a pipe 36 and opening that pipe to the atmosphere through a port 38, thereby causing the operation of the main brake valve.
