Abstract
4850. Boyer, J. F., and Podmore, A. E. Feb. 25. Lantern cowls.-An outdoor lamp casing is provided with a wind-directed drum, hood, or cowl mounted on a ball-bearing and having a vane or the like and a lateral outlet for combustion-products, one of the bearing-races being mounted on the gas-supply pipe, and the other on the drum top. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the cowl A is supported by the upper ball-race B, the lower one M being secured to the gas-pipe o, to which is also fixed a protecting-cap E. The fume-outlet in the cowl side or top is provided with a duct V having a sloping roof above which the vane W is arranged. The area of the outlet may be automatically varied in accordance with the wind pressure by a pivoted flap X, which controls a valve G through levers Z and rods H. In a modification, this valve is dispensed with, and a rectangular outlet duct is arranged in the cowl side ; also a wire gauze or perforated insect guard is arranged at the top of the lamp dome S. Fig. 8 shows another arrangement in which the cowl 10 is supported by a sleeve 8 from the upper ball race 7, the lower race being carried from the gas-pipe by a cap 2.
