Abstract
1864. Gould, H. T. Jan. 23. Bottles, washing.-In bottle-washing apparatus of the kind ir which the bottles are transferred automatically from one to another of a series of rotary soaking - drums having peripheral holders and arranged side by side in separate soaking-tanks, the bottles are pushed into the outer ends of the cells on each drum and, on emerging therefrom, are conveyed to a point opposite the cells of the succeeding drum. A machine is shown comprising three r o t a r y drums and a brushing- apparatus. Each drum is provided with a double row of tangential cells, and two of them rotate in one direction so that the bottles drain before delivery, while the third, which is a rinsing-drum, rotates in the opposite direction so that the bottles are delivered to the brushing-apparatus partly filled with the rinsing - water. The bottles are placed in pairs in grooves on the inclined table k, which is reciprocated by a pair of levers 6 actuated by oppositely-disposed cams 5 on the main driving - shaft o. When the bottles have been moved from the feeding point opposite to the first drum, they are pushed into the cells by a reciprocating bar l actuated by links m engaging a pair of cams n. The first two drums are then rotated by a spring pawl t engaging ratchet teeth u and actuated by a cam p, until the next cells are in position for receiving the bottles. The third drum meanwhile is rotated in the reverse direction by similar oppositely-disposed ratchet gearing. After traversing the first tank, the bottles slide by gravity on to the table k again and are conveyed opposite to and pushed into the second drum, and so on. After leaving the third tank, the bottles are pushed on to fixed or rotating brushes 17 and are rotated by contact with external rotary brushes 18 mounted in a water bath 22'. The return movement of the bar l actuates a member 27, through the medium of a catch 22 and telescopic sliding bar 24, to move the sleeve 20 forward and force the bottles off the brushes on to the table for delivery to a shoot. Guards 2, z maintain the bottles in the cells during the movement of the drums. To assist the gravitational discharge of the bottles from the cells, sliding weights may be mounted on the sides of the cells to fall against the heads of the bottles near the discharge point, or the bottom of each cell may be left open and the bottles supported on rollers. Brushes may be fitted into some of the empty cells to sweep out the tanks.
