Abstract

660. Vickers, Ltd., and Dawson, Sir A. T. Jan. 9. Aerostats.-In an air-ship of the non-rigid or semi-rigid type, the aerostat or hull comprises an outer envelope A containing a series of gas-bags B separated from each other by flexible transverse partitions C, each gas-bag being provided with a separate discharge valve b. The space below the gas-bags is filled with air under pressure which is admitted along the pipes e at or near the ends of aerostat. By suitably arranging the valves e', air may be admitted at oue end of the aerostat and discharged from the other end to clear away any leakage of hydrogen from the gas-bags into the space a. Fabric bulkheads of fire-proof material may be arranged between any of the gas-bags so as to form gas-tight compartments. In one form, the bulkheads are arranged to form end compartments to one or other of which air under pressure may be admitted in order to trim the air-ship. The gasbags in these end compartments are interconnected, as by the supply-pipe b<Î>, so that as air is admitted to one compartment the gas-bags therein are collapsed and the gas is transferred to the gas-bags in the other end compartment of the aerostat. The valves b are arranged in the upper side of the bags B and envelope A and are operated by Bowden cables or by pistons actuated by compressed air. The upper side of the bags may be connected by lacings f<1> to the envelope as shown in Fig. 4.
