Gyroscopic apparatus.-Gyroscopic means for stabilizing and steering a laterally unstable wheeled vehicle, or for steering a laterally stable wheeled vehicle, comprise a gyroscope G mounted on vertical bearings b<2>, b<2>, Fig. 1, carried by the vehicle in the case of the unstable vehicle, or by a frame F, Fig. 3, mounted on horizontal bearings b<3>, b<3> in the case of the stable vehicle, and a spring g connecting a crank-arm on the gyroscope to a fixed point on the vehicle, so that the gyroscope possesses two instabilities without rotation of its flywheel, and is thus completely stable when the fly-wheel is rotating. The gyroscope in its precessional movements controls the steering-mechanism in such a manner that forward motion of the vehicle tends to keep the spring g at right-angles to the gyroscopic axis; this result is obtained by the use of two drums p<1>, p<2>, which are driven in opposite directions at the same speed by means of a motor, and around which cords are led, each connected at one end to the frame of the gyroscope and at the other end to a bar b<4> connected up to the steering-wheel w<2> of the vehicle. The steering power is thus derived from the motor and not directly from the gyroscope. The car may be steered through the gyroscope by Hertzian waves or trailing wires.
