Abstract

28,365. Waldow, E. Dec. 9. Operating barriers bytreadles.-A railway-crossing barrier 2 is lowered by an approaching train by the engagement of a rod carried by the engine with an arm 15 of a sleeve slidable on an inclined guide 16 and connected by a rope 7 to a pulley 6 secured to the axle of the barrier. The barrier is held depressed by a spring bolt 4, Fig. 6, engaging an open-sided notch in a block 9 rotatably mounted by a pivot 11 on the top of the post 10. The block 9 carries a spring-controlled lever 12 adapted to be engaged by a rod on the last coach of the train to turn the block so as to release the bolt 4 and allow the barrier to open by the weight 3. A second barrier on the opposite side of the line is connected to the first by the usual chain gearing 8 for simultaneous operation, and is furnished with a similar operating mechanism 15<1> so that the barriers are operated by trains passing in either direction.
