Abstract

27,173. Horsburgh, J. Nov. 25. Seals and sealing.-Relates to the known method of sealing newspapers, periodicals, &c. by a seal made from two strips or ribbons of paper &c. applied so as to connect the free edges of the newspaper &c. According to the invention, the two strips are so fed to the newspaper &c. that determined portions or lengths are cut off or detached and caused to embrace the upper and open edges of the newspaper. The strips of paper, tape, &c., which may be gummed or perforated, pass from reels k<1>, k<2> over guiderollers l into contact with moistening or gumming disks m<1>, m<2>, and are fed by sealing-drums d<1>, d<2> provided with pins to engage the strips. The sealing-drums d', d<2> are carried by levers e<1>, e<2> loosely mounted on the journals of the usual folding-rollers c<1>, c<2> of a rotary printing- press, the levers c<1>, e<2> being formed with quadrants f<1>, f<2> which engage each other. The quadrant f<2> is connected to a lever g attached to a connecting-rod h moved in one direction by a cam i on the shaft b' of the usual cutting- cylinder b, and in the other direction by a spring or the like. The actuation of the rod h is timed so that the sealing-drums d', d<2> move towards each other as the upper edge of the newspaper leaves the folding-rollers c<1>, c<2>; this movement of the drum d' also brings a feed-gear j<1> into mesh with a gear j constantly driven from the folding-roller c<2>. Alternatively, the connecting- rod h may serve to actuate intermittently a ratchet-wheel on one of the drums d', d<2>. If the strips used are imperforate, cutting-knives are provided on the drums d<1>, d<2>.
