Abstract
26,356. Shaw, T. P. Nov. 17. Fire-extinguishing by gases; sprinklers, automatic.-In systems for extinguishing and preventing fires in ships, telephone exchanges, &c. by means of carbon dioxide stored under pressure in the liquid form, the vessel b, Fig. 5, containing the liquefied gas is connected through a reducing-valve c<1> to a pipe line c, to which is connected a series of valve-controlled branches d, h, which, in the case of the holds of ships and like receptacles, are provided with a series of outlet pipes k of different lengths adapted to communicate with different levels in the holds &c. Air-vents p are fitted in the deck to allow the air displaced by the gas to escape from the holds, and the gas is withdrawn from the holds after use by means of a suction fan m. Heat-operated valves for automatically controlling the discharge of gas are shown at w and in Fig. 3; each consists of a plug-valve, to the stem of which is fixed a bar 9 normally held in the inoperative position by a fusible link 22. When the link 22 melts, a spring 7 surrounding the valve stem turns the valve plug to the open position, and the bar 9 contacts with terminals 10, 12 to close an alarm circuit 27.
