Abstract

25,793. Giffhorn, E. R. Feb. 21, [Convention date]. Weight water - wheels; working-fluid supply.- Apparatus for utilizing wave energy comprises a water-wbeel 19 provided with hinged buckets 33, Fig. 3, mounted within a casing 11, Fig. 2, supported by floats 10. The whole apparatus rises and falls with the tide and is guided by standards 14. On the approach of a wave, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3, a portion runs up an inclined shoot formed by plates 41, 42, and, passing through a slit 44, operates the wheel. The upper portion of each wave passes along the upper surface of the plate 41 and is entrapped in a catch-basin 39, whence it flows to the wheel through a slit 40. The undertow current acts on the lower buckets, which are submerged, upon the recession of each wave. Each bucket is turned into the operative position as it rises by pinions 47 on the bucket spindles engaging fixed segmental gears 46 carried by the casing. The shaft 20 of the bucket-wheel carries a crank 23, which drives the pump, compressor, or other motion-utilizing device 25.
