Weighing-apparatus.-The upper arm 10 of a steelyard is normally hidden .by a shield 26, and, after balance has been obtained by moving the sliding weights by hand, a coin must be inserted to enable the shield to be raised so as to expose the scale on the upper arm, the steelyard being simultaneously locked in the balanced position. The steelyard is connected by a rod 23 to the .usual platform, and comprises graduated arms 10, 11 on which slide weights 17, 18, the upper arm being enclosed in a casing 5. When balance is obtained, a finger 15 on the steelyard is in alinement with a finger 16 on the framework. To raise the shield 26 and expose the scale through an aperture 24 in'the casing 5, the operator draws down a slide 36 after prepayment, thereby, through an arm 35, Fig. 4, and links 34, 33, rocking a shaft 31, which is connected to the shield by arms 30. Simultaneously, a projection 59, Fig. 5, on the slide rocks a spring-controlled lever 58 so as to throw the nose 57 of the lever into locking engagement with a notch 14 in the steelyard. A pivoted pawl engages a rack on the slide 36 and ensures a complete movement in either direction. Coin action, mechanical-connexion.-A projection 41, on a spring-controlled pawl 40 pivoted to the slide 36, engages in an aperture 54 in the side 48 of the coin shoot and prevents further downward movement of the slide, unless an inserted coin, supported in the shoot by a second projection 43 on the pawl, serves as an abutment.
