Welding; thermo - aluminic processes. - In welding rails in situ by the thermo-aluminic or other process described in Specification 25,179/13, which consists in forcing the ends apart prior to welding so as to produce an elastic compression in the parts and inserting therebetween a piece of metal to form part of the weld, apparatus is provided for preventing the parts from being moved otherwise than in an axial direction, so as to keep the end faces always parallel to each other. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the rails are held between a guide f and the projection e of a frame, the projection being grooved or slotted to receive the wedge g which is forced between the webs. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the rails are guided by a lateral fish-plate h having elongated slots, and are prevented from bending laterally when the wedge a is inserted, by two wedges b inserted between the fish-plate and rail foot. Before the wedge a is removed so as to insert the welding piece, wedges c, d are inserted to keep the rails in position. Wedges may be. driven in alternately from above and from the sides.
