Abstract
25,009. Reynolds, F. R. Nov. 3. Pleating. - P a p e r from a roll 29 is gripped between bars 3, 4 and moved up to and creased against a bar 17, gum being applied inside the crease by a knife 27 and fed by rollers 26, 25 from a trough 24. The bars are reciprocated by rods 5, 7, 8, the rods 8 being fast on a shaft 9 which is rocked by a lever 10 driven by a cam 13. The amplitude of oscillation of the rods 8 governs the distance between t h e creases and is determined by bolts 37 on a wheel 22, which is driven step by step by means of ratchet mechanism 39, 40. The bolts are screwed into the wheel and locked by nuts 38 when projecting to the required extent, the rods 8 abutting against the bolt heads when pulled by springs 14 on the return stroke. A single stop is used if the distance between the creases is to be uniform. In operation, the paper is fed under the bars 3, 17 in position to be held by springs 49, 18. It is first held under the bar 17 by causing the cam 19 to release the supporting-arms 20, and the rods 5 are then moved towards the bar 17. Slots 31 in the rods permit of a preliminary movement to remoye their wedge-shaped ends 33 from the similarly-shaped ends of the bar 3, allowing the springs 49 to grip the paper. After further movement, pins 6 on the lower bar 4 are engaged by the ends of the slots in the rods, and the paper is creased against the bar 17. The meeting faces of the bars 3, 17 may be cut away when, for instance, pear-shaped pleats are to be made, and for ordinary creasing. After formation of a crease, which may be assisted by the application of heat, the bar 17 is lifted by the arms 20 and a rotating brush 30 allowed to feed the paper into position for the next crease.
