Abstract
24,917. Sauber, R. Nov. 1. Embossing; printing-surfaces.-Imitations of oil paintings, pastels, &c. are obtained by embossing colour or other prints with a die obtained from a matrix which is produced by building-up the various markings of the picture on a suitable support provided with a copy of the picture, by means of paints of two or more colours, preferably black and white, or by means of a transparent coloured medium. The support on which the copy is produced may be of canvas, metal, glass, or a wooden panel, and after the matrix is built up, it may be covered with one or more coats of varnish, or a thin film of gelatine, and an electro or other die is obtained therefrom. When a metal support is used, it may consist of a thin sheet of lead, tin, &c., and it may be pressed on to canvas to produce canvas marks in the die. The picture may be varnished prior to embossing. To produce pictures having a dull surface, finely powdered pumice stone, sand, or other fine material is blown on to the matrix, or on to the die obtained therefrom. For water colours &c., the matrix may be built up on a support having the same grain or texture as the original. The matrix may be used in the formation of dies for producing the texture of trees, foliage, grass, stones, brick, &c.
