Photomechanical printing-surfaces.-In the preparation of photo-lithographic printing-surfaces, a sand-blasted or grained plate is coated with bichromated gelatine or other colloid and then with an acid-resisting transfer ink. The ink is applied with a printer's composition roller so that more ink is deposited on the tops or raised points of the grained plate, owing to the fact that these tops or raised points receive, more pressure from the roller. In printing from the negative, only the very transparent parts of the negative are printed at these raised points and, in this way, on subsequently developing and preparing the plates for printing, the tones of the picture are broken up into a grain of varying texture or-density.
