Abstract

24,529. Sylvester, W. Oct. 29. Ratchet gearing.-Comprises a ratchet mechanism for driving winches &c. in which the pawls drive during hauling or unwinding, and consists in the arrangement of pawls and pawlreversing mechanism. The sides b of a drum a mounted on a spindle c carried on a frame d are provided with ratchet teeth. The operating lever c is journaled on a pin d<3> and carries the pivot of one pawl c<2>. The other pawl c<1> pivots on a pin d<2>. A reversing lever f pivoted at f<1> is provided with lugs g<1>, g<2>, pins upon which engage cavities in the pawls. The spring of the pawl c<1> is connected to the pin g<1> and the spring of the pawl c<2> is connected through the h<3> to the pin g<2>. The position of the lever f shown in Fig. 1 is that for hauling and the pawls c<2>, c<1> act simply as driving and retaining pawls respectively, uninfluenced by the lever f. When the eccentric i is moved to occupy the position shown in Fig. 3, the lever f with its lugs g<1>, g<2> comes into play, and a movement of the lever e in the direction of the arrow x and backward alternately transfers the load from the pawl c<1> to the pawl c<2>, and causes the unwinding of the drum.
