Abstract

Lathes. - Rotary-tool heads, particularly those for cutting-off lathes, are provided with automatic speed control to give a constant cutting speed. The tool-slide screws are actuated through gearing r, z, from a sleeve x meshing with a sliding clutch wheel u. In the central position, the wheel u is free and the sleeve x rotates with the spindle, the tool slides being stationary. Movement for feed is obtained by clutching to change gearing t, and a reverse is obtained by locking the wheel at v. Differential gearing 4 is so driven at 2 and 12 that the wheel 8 is rotated in direction and amount corresponding to the feed of the tool slides, so obtaining the speed control. Stop motion 14, 16 is provided for the feed. Steadies 19 are provided for the work. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes a modification in which racks on the cutter slides rotate pinions i, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), to traverse screws l connected to a ring m, which operates an electric controller or other means such as strap forks. A hopper 17 conducts cuttings to a receptacle 18. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted but is comprised in Specification 103,303 of even date herewith.
