Abstract

23,037. Macintyre, L. G. Oct. 13. Lap-forming apparatus.-In the preparation of jute or other fibres for spinning, the sliver is delivered from the breaker card to balling- mechanism, then to the finishing-card, the first and second drawing-frames and the roving- frame in succession, the sliver from each machine (except the roving-frame) being balled instead of delivered into cans. The balling- mechanism used comprises side frames 11, Fig. 7, carrying a pair of truncated cones 19 provided with pins 21 upon which the sliver is wound. The cones 19 are slidably mounted in hollow journals 13, and are drawn apart when it is desired to remove the ball of sliver. The main shaft 26, Fig. 2, of the machine drives the cones 19 indirectly through sprocket-wheels 31, 22 and chains 34. The sliver is fed on to the cones 19, and as the ball grows, it bears against a drum 128 and causes arms 126 to turn about their pivot 125 and raise the rods 131. The rods 131 carry racks which operate gearing to rotate the shaft 136 and turn the cam 137. The cam is engaged by a pin 138 on a rod connected to a frame 63, Fig. 4, carrying a friction wheel 59 rotated by a pair of disks 57, 58 driven in opposite directions by spur and bevel gearing from the shaft 26. As the cop grows, therefore, the wheel 59 is drawn across the face of the disks 57, 58 and is caused to rotate more quickly. The wheel 59 is connected by gearing to the wheel 33 of an epicyclic train 28, 32, 30, by means of which the sprocket - wheels 31 are driven from the shaft 26. In this way the peripheral speed of the ball being wound is kept constant. The worm 46 driven from the main shaft operates a cam 76, which rocks a shaft 79 and, through an arm 82, raises a rod 81 against the action of a spring 86. A second arm on the shaft 79 moves the rod 103 to allow the spring 113 to depress the lever 104 and move a striker plate away from the ball of sliver. When the ball reaches a predetermined size, the cam 76 is arranged to have completed a revolution and releases the spring 86. The rod 81 is thereby forced downwards and, by means of a pawl 92, rotates through a ratchet-wheel 93 a train of gearing to operate a pair of grooved cams 97. These cams, which are locked after half a revolution, rock arms 99 collected at their upper ends to grooves 24 on the spindles 16 of the cones 19, which are thereby moved apart and withdrawn into the hollow journals 13 to free the ball of sliver. The rocking-movement of the shaft 79 due to the descent of the rod 81 also moves the rod 103 upwards and forces the striker plate against the ball of sliver, ejecting it from the machine. When the ball is discharged, the arms 126 move downwards again, the frame 63 is drawn towards the centre of the disks 57, 58, the speed of the cones 19 is thereby increased, the parts are returned to their original positions, and winding recommences, the sliver being fed forward continuously. Instead of the pins 21 being disposed axially, they may be arranged radially and adapted to be exposed or withdrawn within the cones 19 by relative rotation between the cone and the shaft on which they are carried.
