Abstract

Spring supports.- The bearings of highspeed shafts of turbines &c. are supported on springs to enable the shaft to select its own axis of rotation, and means are provided for clamping one or more bearings, automatically or otherwise, when the shaft is passing through its critical speeds. The bearing b, Fig. 4, is supported by three adjustable springs c. Between the springs, and spaced at angles of 120‹, are three abutments m, n, p, one or all of which can be moved radially to clamp the bearing by screws r, locked by nuts s. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which three abutments p are moved simultaneously by the rotation of two plates v, which have eccentric slots u engaging pins t on both sides of the abutments p. The plates may be rotated by means of a handle x, or automatically by means of a speed - measuring device i<1>, Fig. 8. The centrifugal weights operate a double valve e<1>, f<1> admitting a fluid under pressure to a cylinder b<1> containing a spring-pressed piston a<1>, which actuates the plates by means of a toothed sector y and rack z. In the position shown, the bearing is clamped; at a higher speed the valves fall, shutting off the pressure fluid, the piston moves to the left and the bearing is released. The shaft may be provided with automatic balancing- devices such as are described in Specifications 8527/12, and 16,809/12, and 16,949/12, [both in Class 23, Centrifugal machines &c.].
