Abstract

22,057. Staude, E. G. Sept. 30. [Addition to 28,498/12.] Envelopes, making.-Relates to a machine for drying envelopes after manufacture, the mechanism described being a modification of the continuously-moving dryer described in the parent Specification. The envelopes are fed into the dryer from the gumming or like device by conveyer bands 11, 12, Figs. 4 and 5, the supports of which are mounted on screws 3, 4, so that the bands may be adjusted to feed envelopes of different sizes. The envelope is fed between rollers 23, 24, the upper one of which is mounted on a stud so that the flap of the envelope can pass without being folded down. Feed-belts 43 next receive the envelope and feed it into a pocket of the continuously-moving dryer chain. A roller 50, carried by an arm 49 which is pivoted to a reciprocating cross-head 45, holds the envelope against the belts 43 and ensures that it travels fully into the dryer, at the same time permitting its forward end to move with the pocket into which it is being fed. A bar 57 holds down the flap of the envelope and a curved plate 56 attached to one end of a lever 52 prevents the flap from rising as the envelopes enter the pockets. The drier consists of a number of pockets attached to the links of a continuously-moving chain 74. Each pocket consists of an open-sided box 76<1>, Fig. 7, which is attached at one end to a bar 75, which is connected at its ends to a link 76 of each chain. One of the sides 78 of the box has a downwardlybent perforated portion 79, which is continued to form a shelf 81. This shelf holds the body of the envelope and prevents it from making contact with glue on the flap. Air from a perforated pipe 84, Figs. 4 and 5, passes through the perforated part 79 into the pockets, in order to assist in drying the gum. The chains 74 pass around four shafts which are mounted in a frame carried by screws 59, 60, which enable the position of the drier to be adjusted. After the envelope is dried, it is ejected from the pocket by a reciprocating ejector 51', which forces it between a feed-belt 112 and rollers 100, 115. These convey it to the belt,' which delivers each envelope underneath the preceding one so that the dried envelopes are stacked in a pile between vertical guide-rods.
