Abstract
21,805. Massey, B. & S., and Massey, H. F. Sept. 27. [Cognate Application, 10,234/13.] Power hammers. - Apparatus for moving, holding, and releasing parts of drop stamps comprises a driving-clutch B for moving the part in one direction, a holding-clutch A adapted, when closed, to prevent movement of this part in the opposite direction and operating - gear adapted to close the holding-clutch before and open it after the driving-clutch. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the driving-clutch B may be arranged within a belt-driven pulley s and be closed by the lever u and cord g against the action of the spring v so as to drive the shaft p and the shaft i through gears o, n. The tuplifting belt c is attached to a band-brake clutch A closed upon a wheel b by the lever f and cord g against the action of a spring h. The wheel b is keyed on the shaft i and is prevented from rotating in the direction of the arrow C, Fig. 2, by a pawl y engaging teeth x. The cord g passes around the shaft i and around a pulley z having a handle 1, the springs h, v being so adjusted that the clutch A closes before and opens after the clutch B when the handle 1 is moved. The band a of the clutch A may be connected to a gear 43, Fig. 11, by an arm 44 so as to operate a rack 46 to apply pressure. In another modification, the driving-clutch B consists of a band brake 3, Fig. 5, to which the belt c is attached, and which is closed on the driven pulley 2 by a lever 5 and cord g against the action of the spring 6. The holding-clutch consists of a pair of friction grip pawls 9, 10 which can be closed on the belt c, to prevent downward movement only, by an eccentric 11 and lever 8 attached to the cord g. In another modification, the driving-clutch is of the type described in Specification 15,472/02 and consists of a rotating pulley 24 and a band brake 23, Figs. 8 and 9, attached to arms 19, 20 which carry the belt c around a loose pulley 17. The holding-clutch is of the type described in Specification 11,007/05, and consists of a grooved pulley 33 attached to the arm 19 and a band brake 32 adapted, when closed as shown in Fig. 9, to prevent rotation in the direction oi the arrow C only. When the cord g is released, the spring 42 frees the band 23, and then the spring 40 opens the clutch band. The last two modifications can also be arranged to apply a pressure in place of a pull.
