Abstract
18,644. McMurray, W. R. Aug. 16. Hem-stitching machines; perforating-devices. -A piercer is vibrated laterally while in the work so as to distend the meshes of the fabric. In the examples given, two piercers mounted on one pivot are caused to vibrate oppositely in scissor fashion; the pivot being carried by the needle-bar so that the piercers reciprocate vertically with the needles. The piercers may project lower than the needles so as to enter the work before the needles. Each piercer may have two or more prongs and the prongs may be so spaced, with regard to the feed length, that no mesh of the fabric is entered twice. As shown in Fig. 1, the piercers a, b are separated by the engagement of the rods a<1>, b<1> with a fixed cam-piece h. As shown in Fig. 5, the piercers are separated by means of a conical wedge m which is moved to-and-fro by means of a bowl o, carried on the needle-bar, which engages a part n of the lever carrying the wedge. The wedge-carrying lever may be operated direct from the machine shaft. In another construction, the bars a<1>, b<1> are actuated by an elliptical cam which is oscillated by rack- and-pinion connexion with the needle-bar.
