Abstract

18,146. Bridge, R., Bridge, J., and Bradshaw, E. Aug. 9. Clutches, friction.-In segment or band friction clutches operated by right and left handed screws, self-adjusting means allowing movement in two planes at right-angles is provided for the screws, lugs being provided on the operating- links to prevent them from falling into line. The right-hand end of the screw a, Fig. 2, operating the bands or pivoted segments A, A<1>, engages in a nut b provided with tommy-holes b<2> for adjustment and retained by a cover d. The other screw-end engages a cylindrical nut h rotatable in a carrier f, which turns on trunnions f<1>, f<2> in the band and in a cover g. The nut h and carrier f may be arranged at rightangles to the position shown. As shown in Fig. 5, the links j, k operating the screw are provided with lugs j<1>, k<1>, which come into contact when the sleeve j<Î> is withdrawn and prevent the links from falling into alinement.
