Abstract

18,036. Bramco, Ltd., and Sturmey, J. J. H. Aug. 8. Jacks. - Comprises a lifting-jack in which the body part containing the operating - mechanism is adapted for detachable connexion with the car or weight to be lifted and carries one or more adjustable supporting-members adapted to make contact with the ground. The body part 2 in the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is provided at the top with inclines which wedge into inclines on a stirrup 6 which can be passed over the springs of a car. The adjustable supporting-members 4, 5 are contained within the body part, the lower extremity of the member 5 being rounded to engage the ground and also provided with a flange 10 which affords an increased supporting-area on soft ground. The member 5 is provided with holes, through one of which and a corresponding hole in the member 4 a pin 13 may be passed. The member 4 is provided with ratchet teeth engaged by weighted pawls on the movable member 3. The jack is operated by a lever 19 pivoted to the body part and carrying a weighted pivoted pawl 17 which engages teeth on the movable member 3, a retaining-pawl 18 being also pivoted to the body part. Provision is made for lowering in the following manner. A trip lever 20 pivoted to the jack body at 21 has projections 20<a>, 20<b> which engage lugs 22, 23 on pawls 17, 18 respectively. This lever is swung by a weighted lever 24 into and out of its operative position, Fig. 3 shows the operative position. On moving the hand-lever 19 downward from the position shown, when the projection 22 has cleared the projection 20<a>, the pawl 17 swings into engagement with the teeth on the member 3 lower down. When the weight is taken by the pawl 17, the trip lever resting on the projections 20b, 23 forces the pawl 18 out of engagement. On again raising the lever 19, the lugs 22, 20<a> engage and the trip lever is raised, allowing the pawl 18 to swing back into engagement with the rack, and the pawl 17 is released. In the modification shown in Fig. 14, the upper part of the jack is formed as a cylinder 26, in which works a plunger 27 carried by a tubular rod 28 sliding in the lower part of the body 2. The telescopic adjusting-members 4, 5 are retained as before. The car is lifted by admitting compressed air or liquid to the cylinder above the piston. Toggle-levers 29 are provided so as to be in alinement at the point of highest lift to provide against slow falling of the load due to leakage.
