Abstract
17,157. Illingworth, A. H. July 26. Reels, rod.-In a fishing-reel of the kind in which the line is wound by a flyer on to a spool the axis of which is parallel to the rod, automatic means for engaging and disengaging the line and the flyer are provided. Two non- rotatable spindles are attached to the handle bracket at right-angles to each other, one spindle carrying the stationary or semistationary spool D and flyer F, and the other a sleeve to which are secured the handle and a bevel-wheel B<2> gearing with a bevel on the flyer. The wire guide of the flyer is mounted in a bearing L<2>, and has a crank L' engaging an inclined guide rod L<4> on a plate, which is dragged by friction or by a pawl and ratchetwheel by the flyer. When the handle is rotated backwards, the guide-rod L<4> throws the flyer guide downwards and outwards from the line for casting, and on winding up, the flyer guide and line are automatically engaged. Friction washers W or other braking-devices are combined with the spool. A traverse motion may be given to the spool by pins passing through the fitting A' and engaging flats &c. on the spindle S, or, as shown in Fig. 7, by a pin C attached to the spindle S engaging an eccentric groove C<3> in the bevel B<2> and non-rotatably guided in slots in A<1>. A simple flyer guide L, which is engaged with or disengaged from the line on rotation of the handle, is shown in Fig. 7. A finger winding-device J, Fig. 9, may be combined with or replace the handle, an aperture with or without a revolving thimble, and if necessary having a guard, being formed therein for the finger. Specifications 9388/05, 17,250/10, 18,723/10, and 22,701/12 are referred to.
