Drying materials in long lengths. - Relates to methods of driving, air-supplying and feeding in apparatus wherein pulp is dried between pairs of rollers arranged in horizontal rows. The lower roll p. Fig. 5. of each alternate pair has fixed on one end a sprocket p<1>, and the intermediate lower rolls p<2> are furnished with sprockets at their other ends. A chain r, driven from a sprocket r<3> on a main shaft r<4>, drives each set of rolls p and the set of upper rolls q helow it, and another chain drives each set of rolls p<2>; the latter chain may be disengaged. Air from a main h is delivered to a pipe h<1> on each side of the drier, from which pipes h<2> depend. These pipes are formed with slots covered by perforated sleeves whereby the direction of inflow of air, which takes place opposite the rolls, may he controlled. The side walls may he removed to permit access to the sleeves. The pulp is delivered in sheets from the wet mill to the platform e<3>, Fig. 1, of a lift, on which is a bed of freely revolving rollers e<4>, whereby the pulp sheets cut to suitable length may he delivered to any tier of rolls in the drying-apparatus. The lift shown is provided with counters-eights f<4>, and is operated by a hand-wheel.
