Adding and subtracting apparatus for monetary values; transfer mechanism.-Style set and actuated machines, of the kind in which the style engages with and moves toothed numeralbearing slides, and is guided in graduated slots with hooked upper and lower extremities for effecting transfer in either addition or subtraction, are arranged for British monetary values. Upon a base-plate is mounted a second plate with slots b<1>, Fig. 1, in which move projections upon the toothed slides c, Fig. 5, which have teeth upon both edges. In a fixed cover-plate d are formed the slots d<1> for the insertion of the style into engagement with the teeth on the left-hand edges of the toothed slides, the hooked extremities d<2>, d<3> of the slots permitting the style at the end of the stroke to move the right-hand edge of the next higher slide through unit distance in the opposite direction. Each slide has upon an edge twice as many recesses as there are graduations upon the corresponding setting-slot. and the central tooth g is marked or coloured, the precept being that all teeth on one side of this mark are to be moved in one direction, and all teeth on the other side in the opposite direction, with transfer to the next slide. Upon the upper surface of the apparatus there is an adjustable cover-slide c, Fig. 8, with graduated slots e<1> provided with hooked extremities at the lower ends. In the addition position shown, this slide obstructs the lower ends of the fixed slots; for subtraction it is moved up until the slots are exactly superposed, in which case the upper hooked extremities of the cover-plate slots are obstructed. As shown, the graduations of the numbers of teeth in the slides are arranged for British monetary values, two separate slots j, j<1> being provided in the fixed plate for tens-of-shillings. The results appear through apertures f in the coverslide, and similar apertures in the cover-plate, and a cross-bar with handle h is provided for resetting the slides.
