Percussive drills.-In a rock drill with a detachable bit or cutter, the holder has a hole to to receive the tang of the bit or cutter and a slit in one side communicating with the hole, and is squeezed in a diameter at right-angles to the slit to give an elliptical form to the hole so as to obtain a resilient grip of the tang. As shown in Fig. 3, the holder 2 has a tapered hole 3 to receive the tang of the bit, cotter holes 6, 7 to facilitate removal of bits with long or short tangs and a saw cut 8 to allow the holder to be squeezed inwards from the sides. The tang of the bit may have a flattened end engaging the cotter hole 6 to prevent relative rotation of the bit and holder and may be forged on or shrunk on to the bit. A locking-device may be provided comprising a key 10. Fig. 8, with heads 11, 12 engaging the bit 4 and cotter-hole 13 respectively and a spring ring 16 to hold the key. In a modification shown in Fig. 9, the holder 2 receives a removable sleeve 17 provided with a saw-cut 19 and with a tapered transverse slot 18, which grips the flattened tang 20 of the bit 4; the tang 20 may also extend laterally into a tapered transverse slot in the end of the holder. Chisel or other bits may be used, and water channels may be provided.
