Colours, comparing; comparison photometers; sight-testing apparatus.-An apparatus chiefly intended for colour-matching purposes comprises a casing 1 divided into compartments 4, 5. The compartment 4 contains a lens 10 and, in proximity thereto a number, preferablv three, of colour screens 13, 14, 15 which can be withdrawn to any desired extent by knobs 16, 17, 18, and carry pointers 20 moving over scales 19. At the base of the compartment 4 is a tray 11 which has a white surface and can be withdrawn by the knob 12. Within the compartment 5 is a lens 28 and a screen 25 with scale 26 and pointer 27, and at the base of this compartment is a tray on which is placed the colour to be matched. Light enters the compartments 4, 5 by apertures 7, 8, and the two trays are viewed through an opening 30 in a casing 2. To bring the two images into juxtaposition, the device shown in Fig. 5 is employed; this consists of two prisms 31, 32, the prism 31 being slightly in advance of the prism 32 and having its edge 33 slightly overlapping the edge 34 of the prism 32. When the colour to be matched is not uniform, a lens 37 may be placed in front of the prisms 31, 32. In a modification, the colour screens in the compartment 4 are arranged laterally with regard to one another and an opaque shutter is employed in conjunction with them so that white light may be admitted. For testing the colour of a solution, the solution is placed over the aperture 8, a white surface being in this case employed at the base of the compartment 5. The apparatus may be used for photometry by placing a white screen at a suitable angle over each of the apertures 7, 8 and allowing the light from the sources to be compared to fall on the screens. The apparatus may also be used for testing for colour blindness.
