[Cognate Application, 2612/14.] Modifying chemical characters of metals.- In making tungsten filaments or rods, carbon is removed by reaction with oxidized metal, the oxidation being produced to a predetermined extent, after a preliminary reduction of any oxide originally present, by exposure at a temperature not exceeding 240‹ C. to air, or less preferably to pure oxygen, ozone, or the vapour of hydrogen peroxide, or the like. After making the filaments by squirting, drying and reducing, a definite amount of oxidation is imparted, by heating for about fifteen minutes in an oven to which air has access, to some chosen temperature not over 240‹ C. Arsenic and other oxidizable impurities are eliminated. For decarbonizing, a separate heating may take place in a vertical vacuum furnace at 800-900‹ C.; or both this stage and the subsequent sintering may be carried out in pure hydrogen.
