Abstract

14,928. M³ller, A. F. June 28. Wet-separating. - The solid residues from furnaces are sifted to remove ashes &c. and the larger material containing clinker and fuel is separated by means of a liquid the specific gravity of which is less than that of the clinker and greater than that of the fuel. The liquid used may be dilute molasses, or waste liquors from cellulose or alkali industries, or mixtures thereof. The material to be treated is raised by an elevator 2 to a trough 3 mounted on springs and provided with removable sieves of different meshes, the trough being reciprocated by a crank 4 and agitated by tappets or pawls. The large material falls into liquid in a vessel 9 from which it is raised to the separator 12 in which is mounted a rotating series of sieves 37 which force the material through the liquid 35. The fuel, which is lighter than the liquid, rises and is lifted by the screens and deposited on a conical surface 41 which leads to a lateral discharge, while the clinker sinks and is carried by brushes 39 to an outlet 40. In a modification, the conical surface 41 is replaced by a chamber open at the top and containing a worm conreyer, and the sieves 37 may be knocked during rotation by a tapping-device.
