Resistances.-A flat crenellated, zigzag, spiral, or like resistance adapted to be held between sheets of mica or the like is made by forming slits with rounded edges in a sheet or strip of resistance material. This may be done by covering the material with bitumen or the like, removing this where slits are required, and applying an etching-liquid. Fig. 1 shows a resistance having a wide slit b and narrow slits e. Two such resistances may be arranged side by side in a hot-plate; or two pairs of insulated resistances may be arranged one below the other and separated by a thermally conductive plate in contact with the edges of the hot-plate. A strip-shaped resistance etched to form a zigzag may be enclosed between insulating sheets in a flexible metal sheath made in one or in two pieces; such a resistance may be clamped round a cylindrical or conical cooking-vessel, in which case the metal sheath may be polished or lagged on the outside. An outer casing may be cast around the resistance. Specification 18,115/10 is referred to.
