Coating-compositions and materials; impregnating - compositions. - Double alginates are obtained by treating a solution of an alkali alginate containing excess of alkali or ammonia with a metallic salt solution such as a salt of atuminium, copper, cadmium, iron, or zinc, or a mixture of such salts which would be sufficient if the excess of alkali were not present, to precipitate all the alginic acid. The solution remains clear but becomes viscous, and may be used, with or without the addition of water-repellent substances such as wax, tallow, or linseed oil, or, according to the Provisional Specification. india-rubber solution or resin, for the treatment of textile materials, fabrics, paper, cardboard, pasteboard, leather, &c. In the examples, sulphate of copper, aluminium, or zinc is added to a solution of alkali alginate to which has been added some strong ammonia solution.
